Update: As of 4 October, Play-Asia now offers preorders on the GPX2.
Old school emulator hax0r and
friendquaintance Neill Corlett writes about the GP2X, Gamepark's sequel to their GP32, a completely open Korean handheld. The system's getting some beefy hardware in its second generation:
As far as applications go, it looks like they're aiming to make full-speed SNES emulation a reality. Also MAME is probably going to have an increased presence. It's definitely also geared towards video playing; the idea being you don't have to specially encode stuff before copying it to your GP2X [it has hardware DivX/XviD support]....
The GP2X also runs Linux out of the box. Play-Asia and Lik-sang both list the GP32 system and accessories, but neither has them in stock, and neither has any GP2X goodies yet. GP2X.co.uk is taking preorders (only £125!).
While it doesn't have a touch screen (or a fancy handwavey remote control thing), the platform has emulators out the wazoo and uses commodity card media. Despite being Korean instead of Finnish, it's the perfect open source runner in the handheld race. It would be the ideal system to create an indie handheld game market if only anyone on this side of the planet would buy one.

Hi there, I couldn't find your contact details. If you are interested in the GP2X, take a look at www.mygp2x.com. I was so taken with the GP2X that I ordered one and then created a blog and forum for the GP2X community that will doubtless grow. Hope you find this of interest. Richard.

Got one before (in time for) Christmas - it's really cool.
Ordered it from the U.K. and got here in only days. (Minnesota)
